Chapters 23-24 The End of 2nd Samuel
I know we just got started with 2nd Samuel but we got started a little late so we're already at the end. But Its a really good book so it wouldn't hurt you to go back and read it.
Chapter 23 starts off with Davids last words but don't let this confuse you. This is just foreshodowing so David is still alive and he is mentioned in 1rst Kings so don't get too worried. David talks about how GOD chose him to lead Israel. How God took him to the top of the game from being a sheperd, to a king. He also talks about how he was helped through it all by GOD and how GOD guaranteed his success.
Then the chapter goes on to list all of Davids most trusted men and soldiers. The leading three were Josheb-Basshebeth, Eleazar, son of Dodai, and Shammah, son of Agee. It also goes to say that Abisai son of Zeruiah was the head of his thirty most trusted soldiers. Then they go and list the 37 most trusted soldiers that " The Three" were in charge of.
After this GOD decided that he would test David and gave David the idea of taking a census of Israel and Judah. Though Joab fought against David's decision to do this, David insisted. So Joab took the census. There were 800,000 able bodied men in Israel and 500,000 men in Judah. When the results came in David was ashamed of himself; replacing trust with statistics. GOD tells David that he will be punished but gives him a choice of punishments. His three choices were, " three years of famine, three months of running from your enemies, or three days of an epidemic on the country." David told Gad the prophet that he would rather be punished by GOD who is extremely merciful, than by man so GOD sent forth an epidemic that killed 70,000 people when GOD couldn't take it any longer and ordered the angel that was killing all the people to stop and the angel did. Gad then came to David telling him to go build an alter and sacrifice to GOD. So David went and built an altar and then went to buy the sacrifice. He went to Araunah the Jebusite to buy the threshing floor and the ox and Araunah tried to give it to David as a gift. David wisely said, " I've got to buy it from you for a good price; I'm not going to offer GOD, my GOD, sacrifices that are no sacrifice." So David sacrificed to GOD and GOD ended the disaster.
This is the end of 2nd Samuel. I hope you were enlightened of what you heard from it. I'm still excepting comments and suggestions from readers so please tell me what your thinking.
Thanks again,
Jack

I like how God gave David a choice on his punishments! How wise of David to say he wanted to trust God for his punishiment. He was obviously right to do this as God was merciful and the punishment was lighter. We can learn so much from David. I'm so glad we see how many mistakes this poor guy made because we can learn from them. And guess what? GOD still loved David in a mighty, mighty way!!! David is very precious to God. So we can know that God will still love us and that we are still acceptable to God, not because we're perfect, but because God is God and we are his children.
